Healing Through Play: GHR Brings Joy and Psychosocial Support to Crisis-Affected IDP Sites
We are excited to share that GHR has successfully organized our “Play to Heal” initiative across Maida Agame IDP sites found in Adigrat town for the second consecutive time on May 16, 2026. Designed specifically for crisis-affected children and youth, this program serves as a vital pathway for trauma healing and mental well-being.
During the event, our dedicated teams facilitated a diverse range of recreational activities, including:
Team Sports: Energizing football and volleyball matches to build community and resilience.
Interactive Challenges: Specially designed games that encourage problem-solving and engagement.
Child-Friendly Games: Safe, playful spaces for younger children to rediscover the joy of childhood.
Beyond physical activities, music played a central role in the event acting as a powerful tool for relaxation, emotional expression, and fostering deep connections among the participants.
By creating these safe spaces for entertainment and social engagement, GHR remains committed to relieving stress, restoring a sense of normalcy, and providing essential psychosocial support to vulnerable youth and children enduring displacement.

Beyond Mobility: A New Chapter for Mr. Mamuye
At Generous Hands of Relief (GHR), we believe that physical barriers should never limit a person’s potential. This month, through the incredible generosity of our Diaspora supporters, GHR successfully facilitated a life-changing donation: a specialized electrical three-wheel motorbike for a resilient father and community member.
The Challenge: Overcoming Years of Isolation
Mr. Mamuye is a 60-year-old father of six who has spent the last four years receiving care at a medical rehabilitation facility. After losing his left arm and left lower leg, his world became very small. Without the means to move independently, he faced deep physical and social isolation from the community he loves.
“The past four years were a very difficult time for me,” Mamuye shared. “I couldn’t even travel to church to thank God or visit my family and friends. Starting any kind of work felt impossible.”
The Intervention: A Sustainable Path to Independence
GHR acted as the trusted bridge between the Diaspora community and the frontlines of recovery. We prioritized an electrical model to ensure Mr. Mamuye would not be burdened by high fuel costs, providing him with a truly sustainable solution for his daily life.
This intervention is a core part of GHR’s mission to support inclusive reintegration for persons with disabilities (PWDs) as they transition from medical care back to their families and livelihoods.
The Impact: A Bright Future Ahead
The change was immediate. With his new mobility, Mr. Mamuye is no longer a spectator in his own life; he is an active participant once again.
“Thanks to GHR, I have gained hope again. I feel I have a bright future ahead. With the help of this bike, I can go anywhere I want, and I am already planning to start working so I can support my family once more.”
Our Commitment to Localization
By overcoming physical isolation and providing a reliable means of movement, GHR is directly empowering vulnerable individuals to lead self-sufficient lives. This project is a testament to how local action, fueled by global support, can restore dignity and social stability.
Support Our Mission
GHR continues to identify individuals like Mr. Mamuye who need specialized support to regain their independence. Your contributions create a ripple effect of hope across the region.

From Silence to Smiles: How “Play to Heal” is Restoring Childhood in IDP Sites
In the crowded environment of the IDP sites in Adigrat, the sounds of childhood—laughter, running, and play—are often replaced by a heavy, uncertain silence. For many children and youth, the weight of displacement has stolen their sense of safety. To address this, Generous Hands of Relief (GHR) launched the “Play to Heal” initiative, transforming the open spaces within the camps into sanctuaries of recovery.
The site came alive as children engaged in a variety of therapeutic activities. From the high-energy teamwork of football and volleyball to the rhythmic joy of group rope skipping, the physical movement helped release months of pent-up tension. The air was filled with melody as children participated in dancing to music, while games like “Simon Says” focused their minds, helping them regain a sense of concentration and structure.
The impact was best captured at the end of the session, when a group of children came to our volunteers and said, “Please come frequently and play with us! We are very happy today and enjoyed the games.” Seeing their bright faces, our volunteers felt how truly excited the children were and how much they were already longing for the next day of play. This wasn’t just a game; it was a vital moment of connection that proved even in the most difficult circumstances, healing begins with the freedom to play.
The “Play to Heal” event in Adigrat proved that recreation is a powerful form of therapy. By providing these structured outlets for stress and spaces for social connection, GHR is helping children move from isolation to interaction, building the resilience needed for a brighter future.

Empowering Local Healers🌿: GHR Hosts Trauma Recovery Training in Adigrat
On March 12, Generous Hands of Relief (GHR) gathered our dedicated volunteers in Adigrat for a transformative training on Trauma Recovery Awareness.
At GHR, we believe that effective relief begins with a “Do No Harm” foundation. This training equipped our local first responders with the vital skills to recognize psychological distress and provide stabilizing Psychological First Aid. By establishing strict boundaries and confidentiality, we are building a professional bridge between vulnerable survivors and the clinical care they deserve.
The Heart of the Mission: Volunteer Reactions
The atmosphere in the room was one of deep commitment and renewed purpose.
A sense of readiness: Many volunteers expressed that the training “filled a gap,” giving them the language to describe what they see in the field every day.
Emotional connection: One participant shared: “I now realize that listening is just as important as giving. I feel better prepared to protect my community—and myself—from the weight of this work.”
Empowerment: There was a collective sense of pride in becoming a “resilient, trusted resource” capable of fostering healing from within our own community.
The Result: GHR is now stronger and more resilient. We aren’t just providing aid; we are fostering long-term, sustainable healing for the people of Tigray.

Celebrating International Women’s Day: Generous Hands of Relief in Action
On March 8, Generous Hands of Relief (GHR) joined partners and communities across the region to celebrate International Women’s Day. Our dedicated teams were active participants in high-profile events held in Mekelle, Adigrat, and Shire, standing in solidarity with those working toward gender equality and empowerment.
Organized through the collaborative efforts of Local and International NGOs, UN agencies, and government stakeholders, these celebrations highlighted the vital role of women in both humanitarian response and sustainable development.
Under this year’s powerful theme, “GIVE TO GAIN,” our staff engaged in community dialogues and commemorative activities. The theme underscores a fundamental truth: when we invest in the dignity, health, and rights of women, the entire community gains in resilience and strength.
At GHR, we remain committed to integrating these values into our emergency programs and long-term initiatives, ensuring that the spirit of “Give to Gain” drives our mission forward every day.

GHR’s Commitment to Polio Eradication in Tigray
Generous Hands of Relief (GHR) joined forces with the Tigray Regional Health Bureau (TRHB) and a dedicated network of local stakeholders to conduct a vital nOPV2 (novel Oral Polio Vaccine type 2) immunization campaign.
Against a backdrop of rebuilding health systems and reaching underserved communities, this campaign was a critical step toward ensuring that no child in the Tigray region is left vulnerable to the threat of polio.
Collaboration in Action
The success of this mission was rooted in a strong partnership between GHR, the TRHB, and community leaders. By combining technical expertise with local knowledge, we were able to navigate complex logistics and reach remote areas that had previously faced barriers to healthcare access.
Integrated Support: GHR provided on-the-ground technical assistance, cold chain management, and monitoring.
Community Trust: Working with local stakeholders allowed us to engage directly with families, addressing vaccine hesitancy and ensuring high participation.
Targeted Reach: The campaign focused on children under five, with a special emphasis on identifying “zero-dose” children who had never before received a vaccination.
Overcoming Challenges
The December 2025 campaign took place during a pivotal time for the region. Despite challenges related to infrastructure and hard-to-reach geography, our teams utilized house-to-house strategies to ensure every household was visited. This proactive approach did more than just deliver vaccines; it served as a platform to monitor general child health and strengthen the regional surveillance system for Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP).
Looking Forward
For GHR, the nOPV2 campaign in Tigray is more than just a campaign; it is a testament to our mission of health equity. By supporting the TRHB’s vision of a resilient health system, we are helping to build a future where preventable diseases like polio are a thing of the past.
“Our partnership with the TRHB and local communities proves that when we work together, we can overcome any obstacle to protect the next generation.”
