GHR’s Commitment to Polio Eradication in Tigray

Generous Hands of Relief (GHR) joined forces with the Tigray Regional Health Bureau (TRHB) and a dedicated network of local stakeholders to conduct a vital nOPV2 (novel Oral Polio Vaccine type 2) immunization campaign.
Against a backdrop of rebuilding health systems and reaching underserved communities, this campaign was a critical step toward ensuring that no child in the Tigray region is left vulnerable to the threat of polio.
Collaboration in Action
The success of this mission was rooted in a strong partnership between GHR, the TRHB, and community leaders. By combining technical expertise with local knowledge, we were able to navigate complex logistics and reach remote areas that had previously faced barriers to healthcare access.
Integrated Support: GHR provided on-the-ground technical assistance, cold chain management, and monitoring.
Community Trust: Working with local stakeholders allowed us to engage directly with families, addressing vaccine hesitancy and ensuring high participation.
Targeted Reach: The campaign focused on children under five, with a special emphasis on identifying “zero-dose” children who had never before received a vaccination.
Overcoming Challenges
The December 2025 campaign took place during a pivotal time for the region. Despite challenges related to infrastructure and hard-to-reach geography, our teams utilized house-to-house strategies to ensure every household was visited. This proactive approach did more than just deliver vaccines; it served as a platform to monitor general child health and strengthen the regional surveillance system for Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP).
Looking Forward
For GHR, the nOPV2 campaign in Tigray is more than just a campaign; it is a testament to our mission of health equity. By supporting the TRHB’s vision of a resilient health system, we are helping to build a future where preventable diseases like polio are a thing of the past.
“Our partnership with the TRHB and local communities proves that when we work together, we can overcome any obstacle to protect the next generation.”  GHR Leadership
